4 Reasons to Eat a Low-Carb Breakfast

From increasing exercise endurance to aiding weight loss, studies have shown that eating a low-carb breakfast has a range of health benefits. Feeling unsure about skipping the carbs at breakfast? Here are 4 reasons to put your mind at ease!

A low-carb breakfast keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

You may have heard that protein is great when it comes to keeping you fuller for longer, and there is plenty of evidence, including research, which links protein-rich meals with increased satiety. However, when it comes to fat and carbohydrates, low-carb diets tend to promote greater fullness for longer periods of time than what low-fat plans do. In fact, a 2019 study from the Tulane University of Public Health found that people who consumed a low-carb diet helped maintain levels of the fullness hormone, peptide YY, better than people consuming a low-fat diet.

A low-carb breakfast can increase your metabolism.

A study conducted by Harvard Medical School in 2018 showed that people eating low-carb diets significantly increased their daily calorie burn when compared with people eating high-carb diets. The difference was quite significant, with the low-carb eaters burning off around 200 more calories per day than the high-carb eaters. The study concluded that cutting back on the carbs and enjoying a low-carb diet definitely increased metabolism and promoted weight loss.

Low-carb eating helps you lose fat on those tricky areas.

There have been several studies conducted that have found that visceral adipose tissue – the kind of fat that collects around your midsection and that you struggle to get rid of – is associated with higher rates of metabolic disease. Consuming a low-carb diet seems to reduce these fat stores and can lead to a 15% drop in visceral fat when compared to a higher-carb diet, according to a recent study in Proceedings of the Nutritional Society.

Low-carb eating can boost your endurance.

According to a 2017 study in the Journal of Human Kinects, endurance athletes who ate low-carb/high-fat diets enjoyed performance improvements. Specifically, their muscles seemed to store more energy and burn fat more efficiently than the muscles of athletes who consumed high-carb/low-fat diets. The authors of the study noted that these changes could help prevent performance declines during later stages of endurance activities, such as running or High Intensity Interval Training.
